Privacy policy · Updated 19 October 2026
Nova
Nova has no account, no server of its own, no ads and no analytics. Your chats, memories and reminders are kept on your phone. To understand you, Nova sends what you say to the AI service you choose, using your own API key.
What the app stores
Your recent conversation (up to the last 60 messages), the facts you ask Nova to remember about you, your reminders, your name and your settings, on your phone.
Your API keys, in Android's encrypted secure storage.
Calendar events Nova creates for you are added to your phone's own calendar.
Recordings of your voice aren't saved.
AI services
Nova works with Addis AI (api.addisassistant.com), Google Gemini, OpenRouter, or an OpenAI-compatible server whose address you enter. Each one uses your own key and your own account with that service, and handles your data under its own privacy policy.
When you send a message, Nova sends the service you chose: your message and recent conversation, your name, the facts Nova remembers about you, and your local time and time zone.
When Nova uses one of its tools for you, the results go to the service too. For example: contacts that match a name you asked about (their names, numbers and emails), your calendar events, or the names of apps on your phone.
In "No AI" mode, Nova understands common requests on the phone and doesn't send chats to an AI service. Voice can still use an online service; see below.
Voice
If you've saved an Addis AI key and speak Amharic, your voice is sent to Addis AI to be turned into text, and Nova's spoken replies are made by Addis AI from the reply text. This happens in "No AI" mode too.
Otherwise Nova uses your phone's own speech recognition. That's part of Android, chosen by your phone's maker (usually Google), and depending on your phone it may process audio on the device or send it to its provider.
If you pick a Gemini or OpenRouter voice, the text of Nova's replies is sent to that service to be spoken.
"Hey Nova"
The wake word is off until you turn it on. When it's on, Nova listens through the microphone all the time, even when the phone is locked, and shows a "Listening" notification.
Listening for "Hey Nova" happens entirely on your phone. Nothing is sent anywhere until you say it; after that, your request is handled as described above.
Calls, texts and messages
Nova can call people and send text messages for you, and can open WhatsApp or your email app with a message ready to send. Texts and calls go through your phone and carrier, like any you make yourself.
By default Nova asks before it calls or sends anything. You can turn that confirmation off in settings.
Permissions
Contacts: to find the person you want to call or text.
Phone and SMS: to place calls and send texts when you ask.
Microphone: to hear you, and to listen for "Hey Nova" if you turn it on.
Calendar: to read your events and add new ones when you ask.
Notifications, alarms and reminders, and starting after a restart: for your reminders.
Display over other apps, and running without battery limits: so "Hey Nova" can bring Nova up from any screen.
Internet: for the AI and voice services.
Sharing
Nova doesn't sell your data or share it with anyone other than the AI and voice services you choose to use.
Deleting your data
Start a new chat to clear the conversation. Delete remembered facts in settings, cancel reminders, and clear a key to remove it. Uninstalling the app deletes everything it stored.
Anything already sent to Addis AI, Google, OpenRouter or your own server is kept under that service's policy and your account with it.
Children
Nova isn't meant for children.
Phone backups
If you've turned on backup to your Google account in Android's settings, Android may include Nova's saved data in that backup. The backup belongs to your Google account and isn't sent to me.
Changes to this policy
If the app starts handling data differently, this page will be updated before that version is released, and the date above will change.
